John Mayer: Dedicated to Veterans

John Mayer has a deep commitment to veterans of foreign wars, and it goes deeper than donating concert ticket revenue (as he has done). He is partnered with NCIRE The Veterans Health Research Institute. In addition to financial support he gives the cause of supporting those who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan, Mayer brings live music and events to vets around the country. He is deeply committed to supporting the adjustment as vets transition into civilian life after combat service. It is a challenge faced by so many individuals, and mired in grim statistics about how we as a nation, and the mental health and veteran’s services industries, are not measuring up.

“Seeing to it that we care for our returning Veterans is quite possibly our biggest collective duty as a nation,” says Mayer. “We know what challenges lay ahead, and we know very well the nature of them.”

He has recently thrown his weight and influence behind a civilian/military partnership to provide resources, psychological and otherwise, for transitioning vets.

World Hungerthon

This Thanksgiving, as you are likely planning to indulge (and most of us overindulge, but that’s between us and our gym memberships) in a feast, look for ways to bring abundance into other lives as well.

There are 36.2 million Americans, and more than a billion people worldwide who do not get enough to eat. WHY is a non-profit charity working to end world hunger and poverty. The annual Hungerthon is a radio broadcast each Thanksgiving to bring awareness and appeal for donations (of dollars and/or hours of your volunteering time) to help feed the world. “Imagine There’s No Hunger” is the theme (approved by Yoko Ono who generously allowed John Lennon’s lyric and images to stand for the project). Other giants of the music industry are on board and have donated items for auction to raise money. Bid on these items, make a general donation, and volunteer some time for other events and spreading the word.

It is what being thankful is all about.

Cruise down the freeway in Los Angeles or look along some New York roadsides, and you’ll see signs saying that this particular stretch of road is cleaned and maintained by Bette Midler. I’ll have to say I was pretty doubtful that Bette, well meaning as I’d always heard she was, would actually ever be out there with her Hefty bag and gloves grabbing up cigarette butts and Dr. Pepper cans. Now I know better–her commitment to the greening of the places she calls home is almost unparalleled. Bette’s New York Restoration Project (about which I’ve blogged before) is a hugely important player in the greening of the Big Apple. So many people find the inspiration to get involved due to her star power and name…and now she’s gathering, ohhh, about a hundred or so of her most famous friends, to up the ante.

Musicians on Call

Are you musical? Want to hang out and do the same work as artists like Seal, Carrie Underwood, John Mayer, Rob Thomas, musiciansSheryl Crow, Taylor Swift, Jason Mraz, Kelly Rowland, Maroon 5, Daughtry, the Bacon Brothers, Brad Paisley, Avril Lavigne, and more? Musicians on Call is a charitable organization that brings the healing power of music to the bedsides of patients in healthcare facilities. The one-on-one contact between musician and patient is intimate and does wonders for mood and energy. While some of the leaders of the music industry lend their time and talent, you don’t have to sell out stadium arenas to be a part of this. Volunteer musicians are needed in New York, Philadelphia, Nashville, and Miami. Non-musicians can also help as guides who accompany musicians at performances and act as a liaison between the musician and hospital staff. MOC is also expanding the programs to Veteran’s hospitals nationwide, so you can jump in by signing up here.
