Today is the birthday of Dr Seuss!!!!! Holy Cow, I love this man’s work. I don’t know any of us who don’t hold the Lorax, Butter Battles, felines in chapeaus, Sneetches with belly adornment, quads of fish in various colors, egg-hatching pachyderms, tiny Who planets, and all the rest so very close to our hearts. His ability to grab our imaginations with wild words remains un-equaled, and he truly put magic into the experience of reading. Thumbing through the colorful pages between those oversized cardboard covers is an activity repeated in households every single day, and will be for generations to come.
Theodore Seuss Geisel still has such an impact on minds young and old, and in his honor, today is the National Education Association‘s READ ACROSS AMERICA day. All day and evening, in schools and libraries and community centers, events are going on to get young people reading (something more than the brain-killing txtx on thr celz). Those telltale red and white-striped Cat in the Hat hats are everywhere as even celebrities get into the swing of things and read aloud in classrooms and on large stages. More than 45 million people are participating…surely you’re one of them? If not, grab up a book and the attention of a young person nearby, and get cracking. If not at home, volunteer to be a reader in a classroom, today, tomorrow, every week/month/year (as we see education funds being sequestered and bled away, classroom volunteers become ever more important). Readers are needed year-round.
