OK, I admit it, I’m a total Walking Dead geek. The AMC show is a complete guilty pleasure for me, and I’m definitely looking forward to the new season beginning October 14.
I like this campaign…AMC and the show have teamed up with the American Red Cross to get the word out about the need for blood donations…in a zombified kind of way. Several celebrities got done up by the show’s creative make up and special effects teams to become zombies (“walkers”) and the marketing team uses a zombie’s favorite food–brains–to entice viewers, undead and alive alike, to join the cause and give blood. Every 2 seconds of every day, someone in the US needs blood, and supplies are never as plentiful as they should be. While this message is goofy (the video is a PZA, “Public Zombie Announcement”) the message is dead serious–especially if you’ve ever had a loved one in a medical emergency who needed a transfusion…or if you’ve been there yourself.
If you can, and if you qualify (many of us, no matter how much we’d like to help, are not legally allowed to donate blood or bone marrow–so make sure), won’t you open up a vein?
