International Day for Street Children

I’m sorry I didn’t get to post this earlier, but I was late to the game on this one. Yesterday, April 12, was the International Day for Street Children: Louder Together launched by the Consortium for Street Children. While the first day of the initiative has come and gone–they–and we–are in it for the long haul, in support of millions of kids who live outside of homes, outside the system, outside of the thoughts or concerns of too many of us.

130 countries have signed on to the United Nations Convention on Rights of the Child (except the United States and Somalia…really?) If your only awareness of the legions of street kids is watching Slumdog Millionnaire, then you owe it to yourself to get up to speed.

“I have been a street girl since my father made a woman of me. I carry on in the world but I am really dead.”

THAT is not the world I am committed to being in. Get yourself involved–in whatever issue matters to you–make a difference. It really makes a difference, for the worse, if you do nothing. You have more impact than you realize.
