Today, September 17, is PARK(ing) DAY, an annual, open-source global event that blends agitprop theatre and activism with the spirit of flash mob public events. On this day, in cities around the world, to call attention to the need and current lack of green space in urban settings, people create temporary parks from metered parking spaces. The projects can be quite simple, laying out a picnic blanket where a car would normally park, dropping a few quarters (or whatever currency is used in the city), or playing large with sod lawns, potted trees, park benches, slides, and more. The main criteria is that when the metered time expires, it all gets rolled up, taken away, and the parking space is left clean and ready for someone to pull in with their big ol- gas-guzzling Hummer so they can go buy their groceries…
The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat … at least until the meter runs out!
Last year, there were 700 impromptu parks in 140 cities across 21 nations on six continents. It is a fun, energized, simple movement.
Get out to a park today…and if there’s not on nearby…make one.
