International Nurses Day

Florence Nightingale

There are over 15 million nurses in the world—and every day we ought to give thanks for that. Nurses are the first line of care and often spend far more time dedicated to patient care than doctors. Nurses are truly where the rubber meets the road in healthcare.

Today, May 12, is International Nurses Day, especially significant this year as 2010 is the International Year of the Nurse. May 12 is the birthday of Florence Nightingale, and 2010 is the centennial of her death in 1910…so it is a perfect storm on the calendar making this day doubly significant as a chance for you to acknowledge and give thanks for nurses in your world. To Herb and Neil and Roxanne and every nurse who I know or who has cared for and about me…For every PERSON who makes an effort to care…this day is dedicated to you.

Imagine if it were your calling in life AND your job description, to care?!

Guess what.

It is.
