Oklahoma City Volunteering

Today, April 19, is the fifteenth anniversary of the Oklahoma City Bombing. The intense, moving, experiential Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum works with volunteers work as greeters and educators at the museum, helping visitors from around the world understand…and absorb, or at least begin to absorb…what they are seeing, and feeling. The museum is open 7 days a week, and the outdoor symbolic memorial is open 24 hours a day 365 days per year. Volunteers (link here) need to be compassionate, sensitive, and committed to making a difference in the lives of those who come to honor and remember those who were killed, those who survived, and those changed forever.

And of course, there are tremendous other opportunities in Oklahoma City to volunteer and be of service, whether that is home or if you are visiting. The Oklahoma City page for Volunteer Match has nearly 250 volunteer opportunities in town for a huge array of organizations and programs.

The American Towns site has Oklahoma City volunteering lists have local opportunities based with charitable organizations large and small.

A quick “Oklahoma City” search on Idealist turns up lots and lots of results for volunteering there.

This is just a start for getting deeply committed while at home or while visiting. An afternoon or a lifetime commitment—it all makes a difference, and if not you, who?
